Established in 1906, the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) supports more than 20,000 members in the United States and Canada. As part of its general mission to “advance excellence in public finance,” the GFOA hosts regular continuing education webinars, such as the Equity in Budgeting webinar series.

Designed for chief financial officers, finance directors, department directors, and budget managers, Equity in Budgeting consisted of two related sessions. The first of these sessions, “Lessons Learned in Budgeting for Equity” took place on December 7, 2023. It discussed the allocation of local government resources with an emphasis on closing the unfair economic gaps that separate different racial and social groups. Event presenters drew upon information from leading scholars and the “Results for America's City Budgeting for Equity and Recovery” program. Titled “Applying Budgeting for Equity in Your Community” the second half of the Equity in Budgeting series took place on December 14, 2023. An interactive workshop, this session gave participants the opportunity to apply the equity principles they learned.
